About

A 3D printing lab inside neurosurgery

NeuroLab 3D is the translational 3D printing laboratory of the Division of Neurosurgery at the Federal University of São Paulo / Escola Paulista de Medicina.

What we do

We turn imaging studies into physical and digital objects for surgical planning, procedure rehearsal, patient explanation and teaching.

Alongside that, we build scoring instruments and browser tools that make explicit the decisions that today remain implicit in each surgeon's judgement.

As part of a public university, everything the lab publishes here is free.

How we work

The scan never leaves the user's computer.Every tool runs entirely in the browser: no DICOM is sent to any server, ours or anyone else's.
Assistive, never autonomous. The software proposes a segmentation, a score or an approach; the surgeon decides and signs.
An instrument without prospective validation is a hypothesis.A published score is not a validated score, and the lab states which stage each instrument is at.
What is here is free.Everything published on this site is free to use for students, residents and researchers.

Pipeline

From DICOM to printed part

The same pipeline applies to skull, spine, brain and vessels — what changes is where density misleads.

  1. AcquisitionCT or MRI in DICOM, de-identified before any step.
  2. SegmentationThreshold, region growing and slice-by-slice correction.
  3. MeshSurface extraction and smoothing without losing anatomy.
  4. RepairWatertight mesh, ready to slice.
  5. PrintingSlicing and FDM printing.
  6. ReviewChecking the part against the source scan.
